Who are Triple P? Is it a government program? When did the programme start?
Triple P stands for Positive Parenting Program focused on promoting positive parenting practices, helping to prevent and address issues with children and adolescents. It’s a well-established program designed to help parents and caregivers create a supportive and positive family environment. Whether you’re facing parenting challenges or dealing with more serious behavioural and emotional issues with your kids, Triple P offers practical guidance to help.
Triple P was first developed in the early 1980’s by Professor Matt Sanders and his team at the University of Queensland. Since then, it has grown into a comprehensive, multi-level program, used around the world. While it’s not a government program, it is often supported and delivered in partnership with various agencies, organisations and health services.
How is Triple P different from the other courses and programmes?
When it comes to parenting programs, there are an abundance to choose from – so what makes Triple P stand out from the rest?
Triple P brings a unique flexibility and multi-level approach, meaning the program isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution. Instead, it offers different support tiers based on your family’s needs. These tiers are broken into the four levels; offers general parenting advice through community workshops, provides focused support with brief intervention or support groups, more intensive comprehensive personalised support in one-on-one sessions, or delivery of intensive support for families with more complex and severe issues.
Triple P also emphasises the power of positive parenting techniques. Instead of just addressing problems, Triple P helps to build a stronger, more positive relationship between parents and children, by providing practical tools to foster a better environment, communication and behaviour.
The court hasn’t ordered me to do this course so why should I?
You might want to consider the Triple P course even if the Court hasn’t mandated it. Improving your parenting skills is always beneficial – it strengthens your family, helps you support your children better, and prepares them and builds a resilience for the future. Triple P is a great investment into your family’s well-being.
Will there be an exam or quiz?
There are no exams or quizzes in the Tripe P program. The focus of the program is on the practical skills and strategies, rather than academic testing. Participation is crucial as the success of the program relies on your engagement in workshops, discussions, and activities.
How long will it take?
The Triple P program is generally run between five (5) to eight (8) weeks, depending on how much support you would like for your family. This duration allows for flexible scheduling, including break weeks if needed, to monitor progress and support any changes. This way, you’re getting a completely tailored experience that fits your family’s needs.
How much does it cost?
Triple P offers flexibility to fit different needs and budgets.
If you prefer self-paced learning, you can access the Tripe P program at no cost through the website.
For those interested in attending face-to-face courses, in the Dubbo region, it is $250 for the duration of the course, with a certificate of completion awarded at the end of the satisfactory attendance and engagement.
I only have a phone, not a laptop or computer. Can I still do the course?
Yes, you can still participate in Triple P using just your phone, provided you have capabilities to access the internet. The online version of the program is accessible on most smartphones, and devices. Ensure you also have a stable internet connection to fully benefit from the program.
To participate in the face-to-face delivery of the course, you don’t require the use of any devices.
Can you give me an example of something I will learn in the course?
My favourite part of the course, and a key take away, is the learning around taking care of ourselves as the parents. This emphasises how looking after our own well-being is crucial for being a positive parent.
Triple P will also cover the five main areas of parenting that serve as the foundation for supportive family environments, being creating safe and engaging environments, promoting positive behaviour, teaching new skills and behaviours, managing misbehaviour, and building positive relationships. These areas are universal and can be easily modified to suit any family shape.
